Evidence signal: amber

Primary guidance from Interac and the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) describes security, notification and complaint steps. However, whether a casino-related transfer was unauthorized—and whether reimbursement is available—depends on the transaction facts and the financial institution’s investigation. No account, transaction, identity-verification flow, support contact or complaint submission was tested.

An unexpected Interac notice may point to phishing, account compromise, a mistaken transfer, a merchant disagreement or a transaction whose recipient name is unfamiliar. Those possibilities should not be treated as interchangeable. Preserve the original records before deleting messages, contacting a recipient or changing account access.

Interac’s payment-protection guidance, checked July 29, 2026, addresses unexpected transfer notices, phishing and measures for protecting an account: Interac payment protection. Treat the guidance as a primary security source, not as a decision about any individual casino transaction.

What to save after an unexpected notice

Keep the evidence in its original form where possible. Save the complete email or text, not only a cropped image. Record the sender details, delivery time, subject line and visible destination of any link without following it. If the transfer appears in authenticated banking, preserve the transaction identifier, amount, date, recipient descriptor and confirmation screen. Note when the transaction was first noticed and when the financial institution was contacted.

Do not send passwords, one-time codes or security answers to a casino, payment recipient or person claiming to investigate the transfer. Change compromised credentials through known banking channels and review account contact information for unauthorized changes. Interac’s cited guidance supports caution around phishing and account protection; it does not establish who authorized a particular transfer.

Unauthorized transaction or merchant dispute?

The classification matters. A transaction may be disputed because the account holder says they did not authorize it. A different dispute arises when a person knowingly sent money but contests what happened afterward—for example, access to a service, a bonus condition, an account restriction or a withdrawal issue. Describing an intentional payment as unauthorized can obscure the underlying evidence.

FCAC’s English guidance, checked July 30, 2026, outlines rights and steps concerning unauthorized transactions: FCAC unauthorized transactions. The corresponding French primary guidance was also checked July 30, 2026: FCAC — transactions non autorisées. Neither source determines the outcome of an unreviewed casino e-transfer dispute.

When reporting the issue, use factual language: identify the transaction, say whether it is recognized, describe device or account-access concerns, and provide the preserved records. Avoid claiming fraud as an established finding unless an authorized body has made that determination.

FCAC’s complaint-process guidance, checked July 30, 2026, explains escalation for complaints involving federally regulated financial institutions: file a complaint about a financial institution. Follow the institution’s complaint process, retain each reference number and request written reasons for decisions. FCAC explains the framework but does not decide the underlying reimbursement facts merely because a complaint was filed.

Where iGaming Ontario fits

For an Ontario casino complaint, first identify whether the issue concerns the casino service or the financial institution’s handling of a transaction. iGaming Ontario’s player-support information, checked July 29, 2026, describes a complaint sequence and limits concerning unregulated operators: iGaming Ontario player support. That role should not be presented as authority to order a bank reimbursement.

No operator terms, casino account records, KYC materials, payment ledger, withdrawal history, operator response, user report or regulator finding was supplied for a named casino. There is therefore no supported conclusion about a particular operator, recipient, authorization event or complaint outcome. An absent operator record would not, by itself, prove fraud.

For broader preparation, review casino payment risks and the casino verification directory. Ontario service complaints can also be organized with the 90-day casino complaint evidence guide. Anyone concerned about gambling-related financial harm can access gambling help in Canada.

Evidence method and corrections

The editorial desk and evidence editor named in the site framework assess supplied primary records by source role, scope and checked date. Primary guidance is not converted into a finding about an untested transaction. Operator statements would establish only what an operator published, while contextual user reports would remain allegations rather than verified events. The scoring approach is explained under how evidence is assessed, and the fixed team information appears at the editorial desk.

Material observations retain their July 29 or July 30, 2026 check dates. The evidence record was published and modified August 26, 2026. Documentary corrections can be submitted through contact and corrections.

Frequently asked questions

What should be saved after an unexpected Interac notice?

Save the complete email or text, sender details, timestamp, subject line and screenshots. If the transfer appears in authenticated banking, also preserve the transaction ID, amount, date, recipient descriptor and confirmation record. Record when it was discovered and when the financial institution was notified.

Is a casino payment dispute always an unauthorized transaction?

No. A payment the account holder says they never approved may be investigated as unauthorized, while an intentionally sent payment followed by a disagreement may be a merchant or service dispute. The financial institution assesses the facts; neither label guarantees reimbursement.

How does a bank complaint escalate in Canada?

Start with the financial institution, keep the complaint reference number and request a written response. Follow the institution’s internal escalation steps and use the external complaint route it identifies when applicable. FCAC explains the complaint framework but does not automatically resolve the transaction dispute.

Can iGaming Ontario order a bank reimbursement?

The supplied iGaming Ontario guidance explains player-support and casino complaint routes, including limits involving unregulated operators. It does not establish that iGaming Ontario can order a financial institution to reimburse an Interac transaction. Bank-transaction complaints and casino-service complaints should be documented and routed separately.
