Why a deposit may cost more than its face value

iGaming Ontario says regulated operators generally allow deposits by online bank transfer, debit card or credit card. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada separately says financial institutions often treat gaming transactions—placing bets, buying casino chips and buying lottery tickets—as cash-like transactions. Whether a specific deposit is classified that way depends on the card agreement and issuer.

No purchase grace period for cash-like treatment

FCAC explains that cash advances and cash-like transactions do not receive the ordinary interest-free grace period. Interest can run from the transaction date, usually at a rate higher than for purchases, and an additional transaction fee may apply. Do not assume paying the statement by the normal purchase due date avoids all interest.

Check before depositing

  • Read the cash-advance and cash-like definitions in the agreement.
  • Ask the issuer how it codes gaming transactions.
  • Check the rate, fixed or percentage fee and foreign-currency charge.
  • Confirm that the exact casino domain appears in the official provincial directory.
  • Use money already budgeted for entertainment, not borrowed credit.

If the statement classification surprises you

Save the statement line, merchant descriptor, transaction date, card agreement and any issuer explanation. Ask the financial institution to identify the transaction category and calculate the interest and fee. A charge being expensive does not by itself mean it was unauthorized or incorrectly classified.

Dispute the right party

A casino account, bonus or withdrawal disagreement begins with the operator's formal complaint process. A complaint about how the issuer classified the card transaction belongs in the bank's complaint process. Keep the two timelines separate, and contact the issuer immediately for a transaction you did not authorize.

Reduce repeat-credit risk

Remove the saved credit card, lower available credit where appropriate and use BetGuard or support if deposits are becoming difficult to control. Credit is not a recovery strategy for past gambling losses. Confirm current rates and terms with the issuer; this guide cannot quote a universal fee.
