Debit-card payment risk
Unauthorized casino debit-card transaction in Canada: evidence and rights
An unfamiliar casino descriptor should be reported quickly, but the transaction and authorization evidence—not the label—determines the complaint.

Secure the card and account
Use the issuer's official app, card or statement contact information. Report suspicious activity immediately, change compromised credentials and ask what restriction or replacement is appropriate. Do not call a number in an unexpected casino or payment message.
Classify authorization honestly
FCAC generally describes an unauthorized transaction as one the customer did not make or approve. An approved casino deposit does not become unauthorized solely because a withdrawal, bonus or account decision is later disputed.
Build a transaction record
- Statement date, amount and full descriptor.
- Card network and whether a mobile wallet was involved.
- Login, device and security alerts.
- Exact casino site and account identifier.
- When the issue was noticed and reported.
Know the investigation right
FCAC says federally regulated financial institutions must investigate disputed unauthorized credit- or debit-card transactions and consider relevant circumstances rather than relying only on successful authentication. The institution's account agreement, reporting time and the evidence still matter.
Keep the merchant dispute separate
If the cardholder approved the payment, preserve the operator terms and use its complaint channel for a service or withdrawal dispute. Give the bank an accurate description of the authorization instead of trying to fit a merchant disagreement into an unauthorized-use claim.
Escalate the financial complaint
Request a written decision and keep every case number and deadline. Follow the complaint process for the type of institution involved; a provincial credit union may have a different external route from a federally regulated bank.
No automatic reimbursement promise
Government guidance describes protections and responsibilities, but the outcome depends on the facts and investigation. This guide does not decide liability or promise that a particular transaction will be reimbursed.
