Secure the financial account

Contact the bank or payment provider through its official app, statement or independently verified number. Report the transaction, change compromised credentials and ask what restriction is available. Do not rely on contact details sent by the person requesting money.

Preserve a clean chronology

Record the date, amount, currency, merchant descriptor, transfer recipient, website, account identifier and how contact began. Keep messages, receipts and security alerts in their original form. Redact passwords and full payment credentials from working copies.

Describe the suspected mechanism

State whether the concern involves account takeover, impersonation, a redirected transfer, a false support approach or another observed event. If the mechanism is unknown, say so. A precise uncertainty is more useful than a confident accusation that the records cannot support, and it gives each recipient a clear starting point for its own review.

Separate unauthorized use from a merchant dispute

A transaction you did not approve differs from a deposit you authorized and later regretted or disputed. A casino withdrawal, bonus or account complaint should not be represented to the bank as unauthorized if you approved the payment.

Use the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre route

CAFC is Canada's official fraud-reporting and prevention service. A report can help connect patterns and provide a reference, but filing does not guarantee recovery or establish that a named business committed an offence.

Keep provincial and operator routes in view

For an Ontario regulated site, use the operator complaint path and iGO guidance for the underlying account dispute. A payment-provider investigation, a CAFC fraud report and a regulator complaint have different purposes. Keep their references separate.

Prepare a safe evidence copy

Create a copy that shows the chronology without exposing a password, full card number, identity document or unrelated account history. Keep originals secure in case an authorized investigator requests them. Label each file with its date and source, and preserve message headers or transaction references where available. Public posting can expose personal data, alert an impersonator and make later versions of the evidence difficult to distinguish.

Beware recovery approaches

Do not send a fee, crypto transfer or voucher code to someone promising to recover the original payment. Verify any law-enforcement, bank or regulator contact independently. Add the recovery approach as a separate event in the evidence record.

Quick answers

Does a CAFC report guarantee recovery?

No. It records suspected fraud for assessment and intelligence; recovery depends on the facts and other processes.

Is every disputed casino deposit unauthorized?

No. A payment you approved is not unauthorized solely because a later account dispute arose.

Should I pay a recovery fee?

No. Stop and verify the approach independently; requests for advance payment create another fraud risk.
